Fika is considered a social institution in Sweden; it means having a break, most often a coffee break.
I always make sure that i pack a few tasty treats when setting off on my kayaking trips and often use it as extra incentive to reach my goals – promising myself a delicious Kanelbulle (cinnamon bun) when i get to a set point. These moral boosting goodies are best eaten with a cup of Swedish style coffee (you can consider Swedish coffee a bit stronger as Espresso and slightly weaker than tar).
Fika for Swede is about slowing down. In Sweden coffee represents a true break, a moment to sit and contemplate on your own and I can’t think of a better way to do this than bobbing around in the solitude of my kayak.
