This is a trip report from my own personal trips around the West of Sweden. To book your own kayaking adventure visit; Kayak Bohuslän.
Delsjön is a somewhat famous lake in Gothenburg, known for it’s close proximity to the city and easy access to nature. This seemed like an excellent place to introduce my two little girls to canoeing.
We parked in one of the large car parks (P) to the northwest of the lake, from there it is a short 5 minute walk to the canoe rental place.
Delsjön Canoe Hire offers solid Canadian canoes for hire from May until October. You can check out their opening times on their website. I found their prices very reasonable considering one canoe provides a days worth of entertainment for a small family such as my own. Life jackets and paddles are included in the price.
The canoes are very stable and one canoe can fit two adults and two small children. If you have two or more older children i would definitely recommend more than one canoe.
So we set off from the jetty (1), hoping for that my youngest girl, Olivia, who is 1 year old was in a good mood. Given that her mood is like a ticking time bomb, we decided to keep the trip under two hours and headed for what looked like the most interesting part on the map. Which was the river (2) connecting Stora Delsjön to Lilla Delsjön. There is hardly any moving water and i cannot really call it a river.
The whole lake is surrounded by beautiful forest with a park like feeling to it, with plenty of park benches and BBQ areas for a break. We also saw many other families canoeing, which always gives me a reassuring, safe feeling when i have my young children with me.
We headed for the east end of Lilla Delsjön (3), where i heard that there is a nice little cafe called Bertilssons Stuga, selling sandwiches, coffee and cakes. Unfortunately we didn’t have the time today but we will check that out next time we paddle here, which we are sure to do so.
After seeing a few friendly ducks, which the girls loved, we headed back for the river and back into Stora Delsjön to leave the canoe back at the rental place.
There still so much more of Delsjön which i would like to explore. There looks to be a great access point on the Southern tip of Stora Delsjön which i may checkout on my own sometime.
All in all it was a great trip and the girls loved it. A perfect place to come with children, old or young and a safe, carefree environment to introduce young children to canoeing.
